But there are no such tiles now.

Due to complaints from some church members, the swastika tiles were removed years ago, after the St. Monica and St. George parishes merged in 1993, according to parish business manager Linda Martin. They were replaced with less eyebrow-raising tiles of the same coloring.

I guess the clergy just got tired of explaining that the tiles were actually Celtic crosses.

A few days ago, someone at Stanford University cited this post in a discussion about non-Nazi use of swastikas in general. He mentioned the Probasco St building in the text and listed my post as a source.

I was too busy slacking off to get into a school like Stanford, so this makes me feel really good.

Is it just me, or does this totally look like a vadge?

At a Victorian ladies' powder room, now a chapel. 4521 Spring Grove Ave.

The part that struck me most was the clock tower on what is now called the Historic Office, despite being an empty building:

While the ladder visible from inside the tower seems to indicate that this building is being renovated, that’s not why the clock (engraved on all four sides of the tower) has no hands:

According to our tour guide, this clock never had any hands, “Because time has no meaning in a cemetery.”

I wonder if the clock in a post office waiting room should be the same way.

When my mother heard this news, she freaked out. The husband just pleaded guilty to two counts of child molestation. Yes, at the daycare. Possibly with the same little kids who ran into our driveway and tried to play with our cats.

Since I’d lived next door to it as a child, Mom recently asked if I’d ever been inside that house. I hadn’t.

“Come on, Mom,” I said. “We don’t even know our neighbors.” Which is apparently a good thing.

Standing here, the photographer was probably mistaken for a pandhandler.

 This is where I-71 South’s Exit 3 merges into Taft Rd.

It’s one half of the most annoying pair of intersections I’ve ever encountered. Just as this light turns green, the next intersection (Taft and Reading), which is only a block away, turns red. So unless the timing is just right, you ram it at 50 mph and nip the amber at Reading, you’re gonna have to stop at one of these two intersections. There’s no legal way around it.

Yet while most commuters wish this spot would die, Emily Joy doesn’t:

“You have about 1.5 mins to makeout until it’s your turn to go. And it’s great for all those exhibitionists who like to tease the other drivers.”

I believe I shall pass this information on to my husband.

Not only does the entrance to this building carry the design, but so do the five staircase landings above it:

Yup, there they are.

One should note that the Huber building was built in 1910, when the swastika was mainly known as an Asian religious symbol. Among Westerners, it was as popular as the ying-yang is today. During the First World War, some American soldiers even wore swastika metals and painted swastikas on their planes for good luck. (see the Wikipedia entry)

Today, some residents jokingly call this building “The Eagle’s Nest,” after Hitler’s house.

By the way, this building is open to rent. An agent once showed me the place, but I didn’t go for it — too much pot smoke wafting about.
